The estate / tag sale industry is about to explode, flying in the face of today’s technological logic where collectibles are sold for a song online, and antique furniture is filling landfills.

Baby Boomers and those born in 1945 and before knew the value of hanging on to things they loved or would need in the future. Gen-Xers and the generations that have followed, however, are strongly influenced by consumerism. Why keep or fix something when it’s just as easy to replace it at the click of a button.

I’m here to tell you there’s an entire sub-culture of people who have stepped away from their computers. They instead choose to spend weekends reading newspaper ads (yes, they still exist!) and following signs to local tag sales, where they discover the lifetime possessions of elderly homeowners needing to downsize.

This past August, we hosted a sale chock-full of Disney memorabilia. While this sale looked like any other sale we’ve done twice a week for the past 15 years, the difference was our shoppers. Some came from as far away as Chicago two days before the opening to be the first to dig through the collectibles.

You see, for every house filled with regular, everyday eBay collectibles, there is also a house filled with items that cannot be found anywhere else. No previews. No online purchases. People in search of treasures shopping the old fashioned way.
